Hard to say what ship it is exactly, but a [quick] Google search reveals that it is the USS Decatur (DDG-73), taken in 2009.
Who knows for sure, but I’d venture to guess they didn’t. That sort of equipment is not something this type of unit/boat carries with any frequency, most of the gear is COTS anyways (other than the MILSPEC radios).
Complacency. Period.
Edit: Territorial waters.
Allow?
The process of “Zeroing out" (erasing crypto) from the comm gear is simple, and takes a couple seconds. No real need to dump equipment in the drink.
That’s a good question; it’s one that I’ve been wondering.
Agreed.
No. I figure it was simply a navigational error, and piss poor planning...nothing more.
Mmmm...maybe, maybe not. I doubt their CO here in the states would be relieved, but their Det OIC in country probably would be. The Craftmasters/Boat OINC’s most likely would be removed from their position as well. The Navy has never taken navigational errors like this lightly.
That’s some serious bad timing, and HORRIBLE planning, if that is indeed the case.
Agreed.
Well, the Brits were WAAAAYYY up the Um Qsar River delta too, so there's that. Different situation entirely, but I can see how you made a parallel.
Still completely baffled why one didn’t tow the other to open waters before attempting a refueling evolution. But perhaps they did...obviously we don’t have all the details yet.
I’m aware of this. I was half-joking about it.
Agreed. I've made that run many times myself, and it's super easy to avoid Farsi Island. You really gotta try to drift near that thing.
I know. That’s my point. It’s still funnier than the actual movies that passed themselves as comedies. That’s the sad part.
