I understand all this, but that means that in order for my room to cool down I have to cool down the hallway, which needs to be cooled down by the living room, which needs to be cooled by air coming through the cracks in the doors or windows.

I think we're talking circles around each other here. My point is that I have one window, if I face the fan blowing out that window, then the air that is replacing it is coming from the interior of my house (through my bedroom door), which is warm. Or I could blow cold air directly on myself, which I do.
