I don't think anyone thought it would be "good" per se. They just didn't think it would be this bad. 

Yep, there was some good stuff like the X-Wing books and the initial Zahn trilogy, but by and large the books were either horribly written or just boring as hell.

To be fair the original east blue saga is drawn out to the extreme, even by some shonen standards. Luffy is literally drowned for hours in the anime and it’s passed off as a couple minutes.

Between the obvious problem you’re addressing, and Netflix’s history of not letting its projects finish, I think most people are just assuming that OPLA simply won’t get a proper ending.

Donnie Yen’s character never had a Jedi trainer; he was basically self-taught, so I think there was a ceiling. The mysteries of the force seem like a thing where you need generations of knowledge and experience and structure to truly utilize the way a Jedi does, and you can’t just learn it by yourself.
