What is this “locked desk drawer” of which you speak? I mean, technically, it has a lock, but the keys were lost about 10 years ago (1-2 years after the school was built), and a 12-year old with a paper clip can jimmy the lock open.

Yeah, that was my take....he’s pointing out that he’s not the far right guy people think he is, he’s actually an independent, but people nowadays don’t believe that one can be both for the troops and also for national health care (as he apparently is).
I think he is saying he is for troops and national healthcare but is an independent because those are perceived as exclusively republican (troops) / democrat (healthcare).
