Except that Gems don't reproduce like humans. Rose was only able to make Steven by giving him her gem and half her essence, dissolving herself. Any proliferation of Gem hybrids would decimate the Gem race.

I don't think Steven is afraid of losing his humanity. More like, he has been aware for some time that he is not fully a part of the Gem world. Now, he is starting to become aware that he is not fully a part of the human world either.

A re-vamped version of ReBoot could work, The characters were always meant to be anthropomorphic computer processes. The writers might need to be a bit more computer literate than the last batch of writers to keep pace with the the increased level of computer knowledge the general public has, but it could still work.

To me, slice of life means a slice of life in the world the series inhabits. Depending on what sort of world that is, what is considered pedestrian may vary hugely from what would be considered run of the mill in our world, but it could still be called slice of life.
