It depends. I would assume not, in most cases (including this one), but if you're high up enough in a company's org chart, you would likely get a severance. This obviously doesn't apply here, unless public servants have a different system.

Everything about this story makes me sad. The single mom with six kids who escaped an abusive relationship, how that abusive surely impacted her kids (and her, obvs), her abandoning her kids, the impact of that on her kids, etc.
