I see you responding a lot to this, so I’ll do the same, it’s in the training. I was the sales guy that wouldn’t guide people to the unnecessary stuff nor would I overly push the credit cards on people. I was repeatedly reprimanded for not doing those things.
I worked at Best Buy, they trained us to do exactly this, and then to assure the customer that we don’t work on commission so they should trust us. The whole no-commission thing is just there so that we can build false trust (and also remain underpaid).
When I worked at Best Buy (about 15 years ago, god I’m old), we got a cost-plus-x-percent discount. You barely saved anything buying DVDs, even TVs, but on Monster Cables, it was something like 75% off. Sure you might need a new cable if you aren’t replacing a TV, but you don’t need that gold-plated, overpriced…
