Like the zerogspacecow, I've been stuck in this trap. From what I remember the FAFSA and the CSS profile really don't care whether you are a dependent or even if your parents are divorced. I know people studying part-time until they are 24 to get around this business and finish their degrees.

Before I was explicitly told by my teachers to find the least stupid answer, I used to fail these tests.

I could pass anything but Physics. Seeing as I've never actually taken Physics this makes perfect sense.
