She might. If she’s found guilty, she will serve the rest of her life in prison, no question. If she’s found not guilty by reason of insanity, she could possibly be released if psychiatrists find that she’s no longer a danger to herself or the community and a reviewing judge agrees. I don’t know how often that happens…

The difference is prison and a state-run psychiatric hospital. While most psych hospitals aren’t a huge step up from prison, it’s almost definitely preferable. If the difference is risk life in prison and get a trial or definitely get life in prison on a plea, then it’s probably worth a trial.

A comment above stated that as a child murder, she’ll likely be killed in prison, and quickly. Going for insanity is a shot at not having that happen.
