I bet a group of high school kids with good working knowledge of their metal shop and the proper materials could assemble a functioning gun type version. It might not be the most efficient one ever created, but they're not exactly difficult to piece together. I mean, North Korea managed to do it.

Psh, I already knew all this. My high school physics teacher specialized in nuclear, so he knew how to build one (obviously not all the details, just like this). The idea with salting a nuclear device with cobalt is to produce maximum fallout. Using several of these devices might in fact be capable of ending life on earth, at least higher forms of it. A real doomsday device.
