I think the announcers mentioned in the first half how much Australia was trying to push the US attack out wide. They certainly did that. A few better moments from Crystal Dunn would have helped. My thought has always been that it’s easier for fans to see themselves in charge of a team than it is to see themselves putting up 25 points per night. As other commenters touched on, there’s probably a racial component (especially with the NBA) and being a fan means wanting to have it both ways in terms of loyalty.
