Wizards is unlikely to let players play as their branded characters through a story. They keep a tight leash on those characters and want to be able to dictate the narrative for them. MTG Arena allows you choose their branded character as the player avatar, but there is no story component.

None of the spin-off games that aren’t focused on the card game mechanics seem to have been commercially successful. By commercially successful, I would mean that it was popular enough to either have the press talk about its success or talk by players.
