/comfort. I totally get where you’re coming from. That’s how I felt a lot of the time going through Normal Mode on this game. And I really WANTED to like this combat system. It’s just... while it initially tells you you can do anything with your character setup, it’s actually SO stringent in how you must utilize

I think a lot of the reason why FFVII stood out back then was that people got sucked in by the then cutting edge cutscenes, but stayed for the accessible characterizations and the very quirky anime tropes that were surging in popularity at the time outside of Japan (Cowboy Bebop, NG Eva, Sailor Moon, DBZ). And prior

I found the combat to be the weakest part of my experience with FF7R. And it seemed to me to be most akin to the action JRPG elements of the Kingdom Hearts series. Especially in its relative strengths and weaknesses.

Wow, so Janus sticks with you the entire time if you ally yourself with him? That’s pretty awesome. Again, bluffed my Janus’s threats and he fled the galaxy, presumed dead by main campaign’s end. I wonder if the expansion missions expanded on that fate. Pretty cool if so. Thanks for sharing your Imperial Agent story

Have a magnificent time with Planescape: Torment! You’ve probably heard some variant of this statement a bunch of times before, but dated combat mechanics aside, it’s still one of my favorite games of all time. Enough text in it to dwarf so many physical novels out there, and all of it thoughtful, enthralling, and

Congrats on finishing Divinity: Original Sin! Re: Lightning Returns, I’d say if you enjoyed the first two games, you’ll have a bunch of fun with that entry too. Lightning is your only core party member and the combat system is all about swapping her outfits back and forth in a fight depending upon the needs of the

No worries—I definitely don’t think Kingsglaive is critical to understanding anything else that happens in the main story of FFXV. Its most “important” plot developments just serve as lore precursor to the multiplayer component of the Royal Pack DLC. That’s it. Everything else is just a nifty reflection of the same

I’d say, if you’re focusing on length of play (to last 2 weeks+), Persona 5 Royal wins by a wide margin. No matter what mini-games and side activities FFVII Remake could potentially possess, Persona 5 Royal will have exponentially more to do, for good and for bad (as it wears on a bit near the end of its run time).

That one’s a standout classic, to be sure:

Thanks for the info! It’s great to hear the later boss fights are much better. I don’t know if everyone had a similar reason for their reservations on the Scorpion foe, but for me it was just the potential implication that ALL bosses would be over-designed come the full release, in some valiant yet misguided attempt

Oooo, wow. I didn’t know that about Uematsu’s feelings on his work here. Yeah, I could totally seeing him being a little Special Edition©-y about the themes here then. Whenever you happen to play through FF7 Remake, I hope you have a blast with it. Its arrival has been a long time coming, that’s for sure.

Optimus Prime, Constantine cosplay, and some stellar T-Rex rampagin’? Sounds like a pretty awesome series of events. ^^ Congrats to you and your campaign party members.

Agreed! Just as with other genres and storytelling devices, FMV isn’t inherently bad. There’s good executions of FMV storytelling (Tex Murphy, Wing Commander III, Gabriel Knight II, Contradiction!, Her Story), and there’s the lesser grade stuff that’s trying to ride a gimmick rather than flesh anything out with

“Ooooo, new layout reminiscent of the old AV Club!! Cool! Where’s the Games section? Where’s... where’s the Games section? Ruh roh...”
