Depending on the time and location, wet nurses would have been an option to some as well, for people living in some small tight knit communities and for the wealthy at least.

I think the better advise is to try to go during the slower times or off-season. There’s also usually a tour or guide option that gets you special or early access for a fee. I did that for Stonehenge to be the first group on-site AND be able to freely walk inside to see the stones up-close for 20 minutes. Same for Taj

Fast Times at Ridgemont High?

While I have to agree that this article is finding its target audience in me, it makes me ashamed for my own demographic. I feel like turning down a deal on otherwise expensive stuff solely because there might theoretically be a safety issue is definitely the territory of the privileged. Many (most?) do not have that

I’ve always found that “McDonald’s doesn’t rot because it’s full of “chemicals” and “preservatives” claim a bit puzzling. For starters, the stuff they sell is usually eaten pretty promptly. There’s not much point using fancy preservatives when the time from when it’s processed to eaten would only be a few days and a

Reading between the lines, the official answer of, ‘It’s not safe to make your own formula’ really means that it’s not safe for everyone. Some people are not smart enough to do it themselves, some people can’t access or afford the correct ingredients, some babies have special needs, and the government does not have

Yeah, this is like the morons who saw cellulose on the cheese containers and thought they had sawdust in them because cellulose = tree. On a chemical level, lots of things are a lot like lots of other things.

Not to mention all the myriad reasons why someone might be raising an infant they did not personally give birth to.

Silica, either colloidal, precipitated, or pyrogenic fumed, is a common additive in food production. It is used primarily as a flow or anti-caking agent in powdered foods such as spices and non-dairy coffee creamer, or powders to be formed into pharmaceutical tablets.

See, that sounds like something you do when you’re already there, not a reason to go there lol.

Even instant mashed potatoes flakes simply contain...potatoes, along with some other additives. There’s no reason to make them out of anything else as it would probably be more expensive than actual potatoes. That’s the thing most of these dumb myths have in common with most conspiracies, that the conspiracy actually

I have to agree with all the Disney hate. Taking a child there is pure torture. Even if you are into amusement parks, theirs is so antiquated and poorly done, it is all just a blatant cash grab. You spend 80% of your time waiting in line with impatient little kids. PLEASE slap up A few TVs and scrounge up some shows

I’m going to add Disney. I do not get the appeal. At. All. If I had kids

Do you also think that Philadelphia is just the Rocky steps?

Seconded on the Louvre. Go, for sure, but if the Mona Lisa is crowded then skip it. I lucked out my first time there. I went during the evening hours, which unfortunately have been suspended during covid, and the place was practically empty. After that, I’ve visited the Louvre again, but never ventured toward the Mona

I think one of the real challenges of Disney for me is that, by the time your kids are old enough to tackle it without devolving into miserable wretches midway through the day, they’re also kinda outgrowing Disney.

In NYC, Instead of The Met, go across the street to The Fricke Museum. You can see the entire thing in about 60-90min. Great art and lots that you will recognize.

Why would anyone skip the Red Light District in Amsterdam? It’s such a great time, even if you just spend 45 minutes walking from one end to the other. I would argue that even if you’re not going to partake in any of the festivities there, just people watching along the canal is worth it. And you can end the visit

So the thing about Disney is that if you like that stuff there isn’t a better experience anywhere. They just utterly nailed it.  So calling it “overrated” is a bit silly.  And if you DON’T like that stuff, well, even if it’s as close to perfect as a thing that people are allowed to be involved in can be you’re not

Avoiding “touristy” experiences is as much a matter of timing as it is destination.
