That part was added after the fact. Epic games themselves said that there would be no more wipes when the game went into early access.. So you cant blame people for being surprised.

Once you get to Plankerton (2nd area) and hit the paywall/grind, it loses most of it’s charm. There are major issues with the progression/looting/crafting systems in the game, and luckily Epic has acknowledged most of them in some form.
