It doesn't help that she (mistakenly) refers to having been down there for months and appears to have lost weight. I'm still not entirely sure if it's just the absence of her wig and makeup but I gasped when I saw her because her face and neck actually looked gaunt to me. :\
The comment from Caputo was callous either way since Sophia didn't fall victim to prison's affect on her psyche, she didn't provoke anyone but Gloria and she barely acknowledged her attackers beforehand except to tell them to leave. The only thing she did that she wasn't proud of was deny Gloria's son a ride—hardly…
Eh… Leanne has proven herself to be intelligent and eloquent time and time again; in the flashbacks to her among the Amish community, in her defense of the Norma-based theological system in the chapel, in her confiding in Soso about her religious persecution. Yes, she's terrible and racist, but calling her a dumb…
She's Charita in Donnie Darko! I recognized her immediately and was happy to see her after 15 years.
When Morello broke into Christopher's house I was shocked that she wasn't questioned, especially since she was left alone on a van run at the time of the break in. I was also pretty annoyed that it seemed like Christopher's assault was played for laughs a little bit, what with the final thug that streamed into his…
Uh, that's all I remember about Yadriel. I could barely contain my delight in the 20 or so seconds we got to see of him and the baby reacting to the news that Ruiz wouldn't be transferred. I could tear up just thinking about it even though it was such a sidenote in the context of the larger scene.
Pennsatucky, unlike the other "sympathetic villains", was actually transformed by her circumstances throughout the show—an extended stay in SHU, an unwarranted trip to Psych, being ousted from the meth clique, and her relationship with Boo which changed her perspectives on religion, sexuality, her past, etc.
They also store season 2's cigarettes in tampon dispensers! Apparently there's cartons upon cartons of tampons disposed at Litchfield each day.
Elizabeth Rodriguez definitely appears to be in her mid-40s and Dascha Polanco looks like a teenager—I would buy her as 19. If they really are two years apart it helps that neither of them looks their age.
Unless that was buried in the premiere this sounds like spoiler territory.
In the Season 3 finale Lolly tells Alex that there's a new "toothpick guard" that started work just that day; the toothpick guard turns out to be Ian the Hitman. There's no chance for Alex to freak out because the first time she sees him on campus is the moment he's come to kill her.
The way Boo and Pennsatucky's scenes are going—their only top of discussion is the assault—I don't think forgiveness is in the picture for Coates.
Alex seems to call him "Ian" when she sees him in the prison and we also see him earlier in a season 3 flashback—he's in the hotel room with Alex and her friend Fari in Paris when they're hiding out from Kubra, seemingly as an enforcer, but he unexpectedly kills Fari on Kubra's order.
It's an added touch to make us see how delusional Coates is because he actually regards Penn as a girlfriend and is confused by her coldness. He really doesn't get that he assaulted her (and is gross for so many reasons) despite saying last season that he's a feminist.
I don't remember any black lives matter reference in the first episode.
I don't think it's such a wild leap to take offense to that word, especially when, in my experience, people actually do use it as an adverb of ~the n word~ not realizing that it's an existing word with a different meaning.
I can't see a Yoga Jones flashback serving any purpose though since we know how she got to prison and understand what kind of life she had (alcoholic father, hippie weed farm operator), plus they can't just throw a wig on her and pretend to give us a young adult flashback like they do with the actresses in their 30s.
Poussey selling weed was brought up in season 2 when she was resisting V's drug gang; Taystee basically said P couldn't judge because she sold drugs too, but Poussey said she didn't sell "real stuff".
Am I the only one who's never taken note of the absence of flashbacks? It wasn't until reading this review that I realized the episode I had just watched didn't have them or that any previous episodes hadn't had them.
