Whatever else the movie did wrong, the idea of ‘TLJ ruining Luke’ from ‘hardcore’ fans is the most hilarious misunderstanding of Star Wars characters, lore and philosophy they could muster.
The strange part is that it was the last Star Wars movie. Like, they said it was supposed to be a trilogy, but the third movie never materialized. Still, I’m pretty satisfied with the ending of TLJ.
This movie is fucking awesome and an excellent addition to the Star Wars saga.
I really don’t get how a tidier resolution is more satisfying. Erin died because:
This finale brought the show’s themes together in a poignant way. As her therapist explicitly said, Mare’s inability to deal with her grief over her son’s death made her a very committed detective, which brought justice to a murder and two kidnappings (saving the lives of the kidnapped women). But it destroyed two…
First off - regardless of intent, yeah, the film has had that impact and Demme has admitted such (again, much as he had hoped otherwise.)
How an individual reads it at this point is, unfortunately, kind of secondary to how we as a society read it and what we did with that reading.
Second - that transformative idea is a…
I think that’s bit rough. It’s an opinion piece by someone who’s life was directly and negatively affected by this film.
I have a very close trans friend and pretty soon after her coming out we were having a random conversation where she mentioned that she didn’t like movies like Lambs and Psycho — not even that they weren’t good movies, just that she finds a problem with their equation of psychopathy with gender non-conforming…
Man, I did not think Survivor handled the sexual harassment that well, but I suppose admitting it happened is better than sweeping it all under the rug? None of this is too surprising, but it is disheartening, of course. Survivor has always leaned heavily on stereotypes for producers and encouraged people to play up…
Yeah, Furnace Room Lullaby.
A couple of months ago, I rewatched this series in the lead up to finally seeing Toy Story 4. And I don’t think it’s crazy to compare the Toy Story series to movies like the Antoine Doinel Adventures, the Up Series, or the Before Trilogy.
One bright spot, especially for an Icelandic-American like myself...our dear Hildur Gudmundottir is the first female composer to be nominatef for an oscar. And she is going to win. Hu!!!!
No Lupita, even though she was the strongest lead actress of 2019 (imo)
I am one of the few people that didn’t really hate the Canto Bight sequence. People act like it was the death of cinema when it was literally only 11 minutes of the film (yes, it’s been timed).
The Jabba’s palace sequence in RotJ is almost 1/3rd of the entire film and it’s an episodic adventure that has little to no…
The Destiny comparison is on-point. There are obvious artifacts of the plot lines that had been planned and not included and the movie spins its wheels with fetch quests until something really happens.
The film over-corrected in reaction to the franchise’s worst fans and was a finale that had to retcon and undercut so many things about the saga to make itself work.
Saw it last night. A few thoughts:
Honestly if they just stuck with the idea that her parents were nobodies it would have made it so much better.
You will need a screwdriver, a pair of tweezers, a magnifying glass (optional), some salt (~1tbsp), and a bag of chicken feed, preferably corn-based.
