The UI on most modern restaurant registers and point-of-sale systems is horrible. From what I understand the companies making the hardware/software do little to no UX. End user feedback never makes it to or is disregarded by the engineers and design teams.

Agreed.  Last time I went in I didn’t even notice the screens, I walked up to the counter like normal.  Guy looked at me like I had 4 heads but seemed to appreciate the interaction once he realized I had no time for the germ machine on a flu-season mid afternoon.  

It must feel good to go to work every day and be told to suggest to your customer they they try out your robot replacement.

The local McDonald’s by my house has those screens.  People tried when they first went in, now I never see them used.  They are a pain and take way too long.  Hopefully they will go away soon.  People want to interact and want to make ordering simple and easy. Those screens are not it.
