I think you fully understand it. The “trilogy” is 3 movies independent of each other, from the same team, that have a vaguely similar self-referential quirky comedy aesthetic. It’s not deeper than that.

Pretty much in every state you don’t have to have justification to be fired, so you can tell your friend to grow up and act like an adult.
