Exactly like the Taycan “Turbo.”  It’s like someone at Porsche remembered when PCs from 25-30 years ago came with a “turbo” button and thought “that was soooo coooool!!!”

I hate how Porsche is trying to redefine the meaning of the word ‘turbo’ to fit their marketing scheme.  If I were to own a 911 Carrera turbo I’d happily install a Turbo badge on it just to troll people.

Is it weird that I’d take a new 370Z over a new Supra?

I suppose, but I was comparing on the basis of three row vehicles more than the exterior form factor.

Having a family I admit that the CX-9 is a very appealing car.  The problem with it is that the poverty spec model costs more than a well equipped Honda Odyssey, which has a more useful interior space.

> I read your terrible take closely.

So your preference is for the energy to come into the passenger compartment sending the firewall through your chest? How is that more survivable?

That energy has to go somewhere. Better to push the vehicle up and on the side than into the passenger compartment.  It’s not like the vehicle can be repaired, a few scratches down the passenger side aren’t going to change that.

I’m sure Elon thinks he’s clever.

A tuned gen 3 TSI makes more horsepower than a stock Type-R. Stock intercooler and brake rotors are fine with just a tune. Mk7 comes with a limited slip from the factory. Add a downpipe if you want a decisive acceleration advantage.

Stock, sure, but a huge benefit in favor of the GTI is the very healthy aftermarket.  Matching the CTR’s power to weight ratio is trivial and there’s no end to the suspension options available.  Stock for stock it’s not much of a contest, but it’s so easy to speed up a GTI that it’s a contender.

A couple of months ago there was a CTR at a track day I was at. We weren’t in the same run group so I can’t comment on its performance but I assume it’s quick enough.

Am I the only one looking at these pictures thinking that if your car requires a barrier to keep people away from it that it just doesn’t belong at a cars and coffee?

The inefficiency is probably from trying to turbocharge an EV. Why use energy to spin up a turbo when the car doesn't use forced air for horsepower? I thought Porsche was smarter than this.

I thought this was an EV, why did they turbocharge it?

Hey now, this conversation is older than the internet. New versus used + upgrades. Nobody is starting with a brand new Mk6 GTI, so nobody is buying them for $25,000. Also note that I said “MY GTI.” The average Mk6 is used up and in need of a lot of maintenance, if nothing else.

The Type R should be a step up in performance from the GTI considering how much more expensive it is. I do like the car and I would love to have one, but from my point of view the ~$30k I’d have to lay out on top of the value of my 10 year old GTI isn’t worth it when my GTI is within spitting distance of Type R

I get plenty of point bys from Porsche and Corvette owners with way more car than skill while driving my stock engine output MkVI GTI. Drive better, GTIs are criminally underrated in terms of handling. Probably because all of the magazines test them with plastic 800 treadwear all season tires.

I would explain it but I had to scroll past two dozen ads to get to the comments.

Why the hell is the Farmers insurance guy talking to me?
