Over 8 years and 125k miles on my Mk6 GTI and it’s still pulling strong. Most reliable vehicle I’ve ever owned, even compared to the Camry sitting next to it in the garage.

Sorry for the late response, Jalopnik isn’t showing notifications for me like it used to.
A well programmed electric power steering rack can do amazing things for FWD. Add the trick knuckle and a limited slip differential and FWD can be quite good.
How effective are printed, physical snail mail letters to communicate on issues such as these?
I had an STI and I’d say that the 310 hp is probably overrated. I know this is not exactly the same engine, but Subaru doesn’t have a reputation for under-rating their horsepower numbers like Volkswagen does. If upgrades are on the table the Golf R is the one to go with. It has strong engine that isn’t plagued with…
I feel like I might have a nice compromise in my 2010 GTI. It was just before *everything* went turbo and while it’s refined, as it has aged and I’ve installed some OEM+ parts still suited for the street, it has developed quite a lot of character.
A lot of folks missing the point here. Yeah if you want a well rounded performance car, there are better options for around the same price. But I can’t think of another car with such a practical, easy to use shape that I can comfortably have two cars seats and a spouse in that can accelerate with such brutality on…
Is there a Fiero in there?
It is an indisputable scientific fact that cars that shoot flames from the exhaust are superior to cars which do not.
I think the new face is handsome and looks great, the problem is that it seems to have been pasted on without regard to the rest of the vehicle’s design so it looks like it’s wearing a cheap Halloween mask. It’s like if you took Dwayne Johnson’s head and put it on my shoulders. Yeah, the head is obviously an…
Adding weight to an F1 car and then comparing it to a Nascar racer is like saying if I put on a little muscle means I can compare myself to Dwayne Johnson. It’s absurd. You can add hundreds of lbs to an F1 car and it still wouldn’t be in the same ballpark. If you want to sort of get close add about a ton of weight,…
My eight year old Volkswagen GTI also no torque steer, only just enough to remind you that it’s front wheel drive. Those who have upgraded theirs beyond what the Type-R has report that torque steer is not dramatically increased if it is at all.
Quarter mile trap speed says more than a dyno.
I’ve run this layout on iRacing. It’s fun.
I imagine it’s perfectly fine to drive in the rain as long as you operate it like you would your grandmother’s Cutlass-Sierra. Actually, scratch that, don’t drive it that hard. Drive it like you’re limping around with a slipping clutch that’s on its last few miles but you need it to go just a bit longer while the…
If every other Nascar event was at a road course or roval, I’d probably be a fan.
On American V-8s I’m in the “it depends” category. It doesn’t take much to make that bitchin’ Camaro or Corvette sound like a pickup with a cheap exhaust. But if the owner cares at all about quality rather than just noise they can be pretty amazing.
If I were in the market for a sport sedan I’d certainly have a look. It looks more interesting than anything Americans are doing with the possible exception of Cadillac’s V line, and surely won’t be as terrifying to own from a cost to repair standpoint as a comparable European car.
I agree with all that you’ve said, but I have one comment on it that I think you’d agree with. People who are angry and outraged for this reason deserve no empathy, but as a whole the country would be a better place and would probably be beyond this problem if people really were genuinely more empathetic.
Mustang drivers are not people. They’re monsters.
