While your sentiment is a *little* antagonistic, I concur. I'm particular about what I put in my body and where it comes from. I do not eat fast food and avoid highly processed food. Even though I don't have a lot of money and technically live in a food desert. To me this sounds disgusting. But I admittedly have my

Sorry to add to the nitpick, but the post also says he may go back to prison. I could be wrong, but I can't find any evidence he ever went to prison. Prison is a much bigger deal than jail.

I get that, completely, at a more meta level. I just feel like the 'pity these people because they don't get the t-shirt content' is misplaced. Also, I just don't see a problem with affordable used clothing. That's a more complex issue, but people in Haiti (citizens) get by from selling used shirts at the street

I've only spent time in PAP and Jakmel. But I really enjoy it there. Especially the strong history of independence that permeates everything. In a way, I guess that's why I find this whole topic disheartening.

I'm just tired of the 'poor Haiti' bit. Other countries have systematically used this type of pathos to politically exploit the country (and others) for centuries.

I've worked in Haiti and rural Kenya and it's the same. I don't get the collective pity-party. It smacks of othering. Plenty of poor people in the US have no choice but to wear used donated clothes too!

How do you know she didn't pick it on purpose? Some people in Haiti do speak English, it's not uncommon. Plenty of people everywhere think ironic t-shirts are funny. I'm not personally a fan of the t-shirt message, I just don't know that it warrants the pity so many others are espousing.

I've worked in Haiti a bit. Was just there a couple of weeks ago, in fact. This article/project is interesting, but I think it really emphasizes othering and further disempowering people in 'developing' countries. At the end of the day what's so wrong with people wearing second hand shirts that would have otherwise

I feel like one of those cartoon characters with smoke blowing out it's ears. I wrote a long rant and deleted it. As a scientist, I am bothered by the bias and misinformation in this article. I don't understand what is wrong with caring about the environment or what you eat, nor why that has to be derided. It is

Thanks so much for including that info. In my fury, I forgot to include that fact :)

I don't regularly post on Jezebel anymore, thus a burner account to comment, but this post upsets me for many reasons. As someone that has worked in sexual health internationally and domestically (at institutions, public health clinics, and in the community) it's really unfortunate that Tracie is using this platform
