A lot of people have said that some of the new side-characters don’t feel like Star Wars, but most of the time these ancillary folk, the ones who aren’t about the plot but just live in the galaxy, don’t get seen very much in the movies. This is really the first time when we’ve met those kinds of folk, so they’ll feel Read more

Tim Powers is great at inventing mythologies, I would recommend them. A bit of a fever dream.

Though composed in 1859 the poem was published in the year that Christina’s sister-in-law (and talented artist) Lizzie Siddall died of an opiate overdose after a long addiction. Though it seems the wrong sister is called Lizzie in the poem. Though Lizzie was close to her sister Lydia. Lydia married in November 1861 Read more

The assumption that is generally made to either side of the argument (“of course she meant it sexually” vs “it was a more innocent era” 🙄) does a disservice to the author and the reader both. There is no denying the sensual impact of the words, just as there is no denying the obvious eroticism of the descriptions. Read more

I’ve never really liked that “training the peaceful villagers” stock plotline so I mostly agree with you on this one. I love how they actually managed to make an AT-ST scary, though.

Oh, and I forgot to mention. Set visit spoilers confirm this isn’t the final form of the Cybermen in this episode. We’re getting a totally new redesign that seems to be a complete hodge-podge of every Cyberman that’s come before. They’ve retained the Nightmare style chest (which I never particularly liked, it does

Check that Cyberman again. Look at the left arm vs the right.
They did their best to hide it in the trailer, but this guy is some sort of bizarre half-Nightmare in Silver, half-Mondasian hybrid.
There’s one frame of the trailer where you can just about make out that the helmet is incomplete on one side, and there’s

I really like the hints of Mandalorian culture — or rather, the culture of this Mandalorian tribe, as apparently it’s different from the ones in Clone Wars and Rebels. I like the use of “This is the way” and the fact that the Armorer is basically in charge, asking if the Mando wants his signet to be the Mudhorn. I Read more

I finally caught up the last 2 episodes of last season the other day. Says a lot that it took me that long to want to catch up. Thread of all the episodes: big baddie going to destroy the universe or history (your choice), companions fight the big, good fight while The Doctor tries to remember things. Solutions come Read more

I think part of the problem with the current companions is that there’s not enough time for any of them. No one has enough room in the script to be interesting, and except for a few moments, neither has Whittaker, really. The problem’s in the writing room, clearly, but I don’t think any of them know how to fix it (and Read more
