I had it happen...but I contacted Nintendo, complained until they arranged a return, complained some more, got a fixed joycon and a free copy of Mario Odyssey. So there's that route.....

Two good options:

Saw that R34 in Tulsa once and was baffled how it got there.

Nope.  Unlocked both through straightup smash (using the close app workaround) and WoL using only 1-2 characters on each.  Unless you just don’t like your options, you don’t need to mix up characters (longtime Samus player, I’m old, so I had no issue running through with just her and Marth).
