IR works perfectly indoors, my TV remotes are powerful as shit, I can press the button withe the IR blaster facing my couch. I have a couple small IR helis same dealio LOS is not required indoors due to reflective surfaces.

I still think your best bet is getting something like hotwheels nitro speeders and adding some IR blasters to an arduino along with wired controllers to it. you just need to decode the IR patterns (shouldn't be hard if you have an O scope.)

Th only probalem with that is that any RC that small has everything combined, though you could have an arduino send the commands over FM or 2.4ghz (depends on the model) or IR for most toy RC's

big picture mode is designed to be readable on a big tv from your couch and can be navigated using an Xbox 360 controller. A much more console like interface.
