Did this on an Ion. Just removed the bolts holding the control arm on, then could take it to a bench and use a grinder safely on the rivets. Much easier than drilling

As motor mounts let go and metal collapses, you can get weird reversals like that. It still happens on newer cars depending on the layouts.
