Since we are not standing next to them in a room referring to them with a word (“wife” or “spouse”) that they may or may not prefer to be used, your point is irrelevant. “Spouse” is no more presumptuous than “wife,” and in the context of a news article the more neutral choice is the less offensive or presumptuous.…

They are also spouses. We have more than one word for the same thing in the English language.

What if it is?
