The most humane method is going to be inert gas asphyxiation, putting a bag over their head and pumping it full of nitrogen so they painlessly suffocate. But that isn’t sufficiently gruesome for the spectators who demand vengeance. 

We could do that now with the current American farmland. We won’t get any better at it with climate change making swathes of the country uninhabitable.
