Starred for ‘chromepocalypse’

My first thought as well! What could possibly go wrong?

‘Stillborn VW prototype’ hooked me: “...making a nice ouroborus of cars...” Just gold-plates it.

Jet sprint! I couldn’t remember the name. Have an old vhs with several runs on it. 8’ or so boats with V8s —and rollbars! Like an water-autocross, and if they mess up, the boats can actually roll over. Seriously insane!

Just DO it! A human put it together: you can fix it. Read, research, politely ask on forums. Buy good tools: way worth it. Always have a backup ride to parts store available. Pay attention to where your hand will go when the bolt breaks loose. Use decent jackstands, and toss a tire under there for good measure.

Almost certainly no AC. IIRC, it's down pretty low and very hard to route IC piping around. I made a few bucks pulling compressors for lazy guys back in the day

Arghhh! Those freakin headliners! Both our 82 Rabbit and 88 Golf’s started sagging within 2-3 years of (new) purchase. It’s a pain, but you can pull the cardboard out and flip it over then spray w/ 3M adhesive to solve it. The problem was the thin foam between cardboard and fabric: it just came apart.

Plus the fact that drums actually weigh less. I looked at converting the rear drums on my 82 Rabbit GTI-clone, but aside from cost, 8 more lbs of unsprung weight? Nah: I don't plan to road-race it. Kept it cheap, simple, and light.

Not a 2-wheel guy: too chicken, but your piece really resonates. Props to you for saying it publicly, sir!

YES! So much yes! Watch this movie!

Finally a place where I can admit to lusting after one. Dated a girl who had the 3rd one off the line-plaque on dash & everything (her dad was buddies w/ some bigwig @ GM). I came from air-cooled VWs, so the power, handling, and comfort were eye-opening to my teenage self. Dreamed of one with a Gale Banks Engineering

The Aveo. Eats front wheel bearings, front suspension is seriously flawed: had my buddy’s jacked up(at 38k to check wheel bearings-bad) and I could move the top of the strut back-&-forth an honest 3/8”. Had him take it back to dealer. “No problem: that’s normal”. Another dealer: same answer. All over the interweb:

Derp: can’t edit: should read “skill&balls”. Thanx iOS!

I would be most interested in talking to the older generation: Moss, Hill, Fangio, etc. Not downplaying what it takes to race today, but the people racing before the 80s really had brass balls. I get to autocross my bil’s modified Formula Ford(a 1976 Dulon): I can only imagine what racing an open car with no roll

I beg to differ, sir! I regularly threaten the sound barrier in my ‘82 300TD with sub 15sec 0-100kph runs!*

“Where’s the Veetechyo thingy he kicked?”

Lolz: I actually bought one of those crack pipe roses on impulse for my gf many years ago: had no idea at the time....

While I really want one(DD a 300TD slushbox), the price is way too high. Here in SW Va 35-4500 would be about right. The veggie oil craze has died down as the price of gas dropped, and that motor is not as friendly as the 617: iirc, you have to remove the intake to change glowplugs for example.

‘Cable-operated emergency brake’ lol! Ever try one in a 20yo car from a rust state? Yeah: fail!

Jalops are a pro-car minority...but ask yourself this: “Have I flushed my brake fluid in the last two years?”
