What the hell are you talking about?
What the hell are you talking about?
It may indeed be a bit off topic...given the nature of the article. But the way I see it these things are all connected to a larger problem.
Call me callous, but I can't stand all this PC crap.
Not sure I understand this post. Why would anyone feel guilty about watching a TV show?
What's wrong with O&K? They've put out some great stuff. Between the two of them they have some of the best movies/shows I've watched in a while:
You are absolutely correct. Although the elements/ingredients needed to exist in space for this hypothesis to have credibility are beginning to be found, there is currently no reason to posit panspermia. We are much closer to adequately explaining life arising on earth without astro-intervention.
Hero is a term that the victorious use. It all depends on what side you're on. Anakin was a Republic-hero in the Clone Wars, but became an Empire-hero after Mace Windu's death.
Sorry, I just realized that you may not have been talking about the movie, but proposing a real question.
The purpose of the movie was not to show the origin of ALL life in the universe. It was simply to show that WE originated from the Engineers. How they came about is another story.
While I agree that it would have been just as easy to put in a line like "Our DNA is a 94% match to theirs," you have to remember that these movies are for general public. Yes, it's nice when they have scientific accuracy, but that's usually an afterthought.
It didn't have to be fully formed microbes. It could have been RNA or transferase proteins. And they wouldn't have necessarily been unprotected. Proteins can make the trip deep inside comets or asteroids which could have provided shielding from cosmic rays.
If it wasn't Earth, then what would be the point of that scene?
You overestimate people's familiarity with computers. Just using the term 'disc image' tells me that you are part of the tech-savvy crowd. As a librarian, I help people with their computer needs all day long. I only wish people knew as much as you do. Trust me, *most* people don't know squat about what you're…
I stopped taking this article seriously after the first two sentences. Tech writers have a tendency to assume that how they and their friends approach technology is how the rest of the world does too. This is a fallacy of thought I call tech-centric thinking...the belief that the majority of the people in the world…
I think a subtlety that gets overlooked is that Hitler wasn't overtly religious, but he was spiritual. He did believe in both a higher power and fate.
Hitler just gave that speech to gain the swing-Christian votes for the upcoming election.
Are we sure it's the actual Dalai Lama who FB'ing and not some teenager in rural Montana who just happened to get the screen name first?!
For me, it's the image of him sitting in robes on a mountain top trying to get more bars on his new iPhone 5 in order to use the new Facebook app.
@Phsmith, I'm sorry but I have to disagree with all of your points.
The Escape from New York movie poster (article header) which shows the SoL head on the street is rumored to be the inspiration for that shot in Cloverfield.
