Here in America we only care about forcing the mothers to be pregnant and give birth to the child, cause you know, that’s what’s best for child. Obviously, having a parent around, having said parents scrape together money to pay for crazy hospital bills, has no effect on the child.

1) doesn’t that still require businesses to provide leave?

That was my first thought as well. If it doesn’t require someone to do something it is not a law. So what the shit is Rubio proposing here? That offices throw an informal baby shower during lunch? (but only if they want to.)

It’s also how it’s done in California, only it’s done under short term disability (people get their hackles up about that but seriously... you try to go back to work before 6 weeks and tell me if you are physically able to do your job) and you can only take a leave like that once a year so if you get hurt in some

Norway: 46 weeks of parental leave at 100 per cent of pay, or 56 weeks at 80 per cent of pay. Up to 14 weeks of this leave can be taken by the father. Australia: Up to 18 weeks’ pay at the national minmum wage introduced by Labor; the Coalition proposes 26 weeks’ leave on full pay, to a maximum of $150,000.

In the Czech Republic, and other places, the government will pay a new mother a stipend so she can stay home with her child for TWO YEARS.

That’s what we do in Canada. Maternity/parental leave are built into the employment insurance program. So you can take 12 months off at 55% of your last 600 hours of earnings or now another option is to take 18 months at 33%. It blows my mind that mothers in the US must return to work so early.

I know, I read the article. I am saying that the same thing could be accomplished without pulling from social security, just like you can pull unemployment benefits without pulling them from ss.

Presented the way you describe it sounds similar to what the U.K. does except 1. They don’t rob your retirement to pay you now and 2. They get paid a lot longer than 6 weeks. I just hope this doesn’t prevent people from collecting STD pay

That’s why it’s Republican-friendly!

I think (hope) they just left out the word paid since the employers would not pay for the leave, it would come from SS

I mean, I could totally see a system where employers are required to give new parents X amount of unpaid time off and then the government would give the parents $Y a month for the time they are out of the workforce. Sort of like unemployment benefits. But that doesn’t seem to be where this is going, so IDK.

No, you don’t understand. The bootstraps trickle down if you stop stealing from the job creators like an illegal immigrant gang member.

If you’ve ever been pregnant you know that at 20 weeks you have the anatomy scan where major issues can be identified. Fuck these assholes—they know exactly what they are doing and imo 20 weeks is intential, not arbitrary. I’m 17 weeks pregnant and while everything is good so far, I have to say the possibility finding

OT i guess - but at the next presidential debate, when the R nominee is facing declining poll numbers and inevitably pulls out his trusty “what about the precious itty bitty fetuses?” - all i want to see in the world is candidate Harris or Warren or who-fucking-ever just OWN the moral high ground on the abortion issue

As a physician, fuck these people.

True. This shit is the “normal” shit the left and right fight about.

Starred for the use of chucklefuck. Man I love that word.

Isn’t this the least offensive and most appropriate thing the GOP has done, lately? Trying to box in your political opponent in an election cycle is standard operating procedure. This shouldn’t even raise an eyebrow.

Whatever chucklefuck first decided that abortion is the moral equivalent of murder, and that late-term abortions are tantamount to inhumane medical treatment should have been burned at the stake.
