I fear you can’t quite compare the typical WRX buyer with the typical Subaru (or many other makes). It’s a niche market, not mainstream.
A large part of the allure of a 5 door is the fact that we can’t have one. The take rate on wagons vs sedans was low when they were available, and when the STI was hatch only, there was complaining about that, too. The MKIV had the same problem, which resulted in a price drop in 1997 that still couldn’t save it in the US. Also didn’t help that the MKIV offered Camaro performance for Corvette money in the same year. At least they learned... nothing?
