On a related note, I’m honestly perplexed why Katie would be surprised that white women of the movie’s era would be any less virulently racist than the men. They just didn’t have as much agency to act on it.
THIS MAY COME AS A SHOCK TO YOU, BUT ART AND ENTERTAINMENT ARE VERY OFTEN (SOME ARGUE ALWAYS) POLITICAL.
This is a political film. It is a film explicitly about racism in American society. Movies can indeed be political. Some have argued that all art is political- even “apolitical” entertainment tends to endorse the status quo by omission- but whether or not that is true, THIS film certainly is.
Black Klansman is a FILM ABOUT RACISM, which ends with goddamn video of the Charlottesville rallies. How the fuck is a take on how racism persists in modern society in women and men alike NOT fucking relevant?
I think Lee’s point was to make the wife look non-threatening, which is to show that virulent racists can look like the nice lady who takes your order at Applebee’s. An actress who was fit and trim like Lara Croft looks like someone who can kick some ass would be totally contrary to the look of the average American…
He needs to become a brain in a jar after his death, so scientists can run comedic algorithms past it to test their actual comedic value.
I should’ve walked away... I really should have...
There is no mention of the character’s weight in dialog, and she isn’t the butt of any physical comedy, so there really doesn’t seem to be much in the way of body shaming. In fact, it’s a rare role for a larger actress where her weight is not the focus of the character.
Or, maybe Atkinson was cast because she’s an excellent, subtle, award-winning actor who’s worked successfully with Lee in the past. Someone who was willing to put herself wholeheartedly into an entirely unsympathetic role. You’re not making any strides against body shaming by making assumptions and directly insulting…
And Connie’s blinkered worldview backfires in ironically comedic fashion in the film’s climax, further driving home Lee’s point that in throwing black women under the bus (to put it extremely mildly: Connie plans to murder Patrice and her roommates) to impress white men, Connie has made a fatally wrongheaded choice.
Plenty of the other Klan wives were traditionally attractive.
I loved every second of this movie. One of the best I’ve seen all year. I hope a lot of people go to see it.
He might get a best supporting nomination. This movie is going to clean up at the awards.
Overall a really good movie Spike Lee’s best work since Inside Man. This is not really a spoiler but, come on Spike just have a little bit of faith in your audience. Ending the film with Charlottesville footage was completely unnecessary. People would have made parallels to current events regardless. .
This was one of the sloppiest and tonally incoherent movies I have ever seen, but like all of his films, this one is worth seeing too. The script appeared to be a contest against a room full of hamfists and the true story, needed to be even further thrown out so it had a chance to be the film that the ending deserved,…
You ought to know by now.
He was eerily great.
This movie fucked me up in ten different ways. And that ending was bold and classic Spike Lee. Left the theater I was in...well, it’s a Hell of a movie, and Washington and Driver do exceptional work. There’s Oscar buzz around Driver’s work here, and I can definitely see the argument for it. He’s overdue, in my…
