BTW, neutron radiation won't be detected by a Geiger counter. And it's way more harmful than gamma rays.
What about the resultant neutron radiation and gamma ray byproducts; seems like they'd be sort of problematic (especially for a young kid where the risk of secondary malignancies from even a little exposure would be a concern).
