Fun idea for a column, but please get rid of the number rating system. It's unnecessary and just make me randomly disagree to arbitrarily assigned numbers.

I'll have to go with the music that plays at UNATCO HQ during the original Deus Ex. The game had excellent music overall, but the base theme stuck with me. Deus Ex was one of the first games I played that had a proper place where you could call home that was populated with realistic seeming people. The music feels…
I feel like I'm writing myself into a corner that I'm not quite willing to defend, but I guess the sentiment I was going for is that indie games should focus on centering their games around a smaller amount of things that are very good, and that they should should cut everything out that falls below excellence.…
I agree, especially insofar as the phrase "WOAH… didn't see that coming" basically describes a whole genre of comedy.
Yea, I guess the lesson is that in creating a game (or anything that's designed for general public consumption), it's safe to assume that everything is a lot harder than it seems. If it's your first time publishing something and it's not something you can confidently call excellent, it's probably better to narrow your…
One thing I was wondering, based on your description as well as the screenshots above, was whether they had buried the comedy underneath the surface of the game. As many zombie movies will attest, there's something darkly humorous about frantic limb-snatching, particularly if it takes place in a gory context. I guess…
It's interesting that this game seems so serious. Humor was one of the defining features of Guacamelee. Virtually every verbal exchange had some kind of joke in it, and the backgrounds of the game were chock full of visual easter eggs and references. Plus the whole game was kind of over the top and silly. That said, I…
Just as long as it doesnt have any traintrack wiimote levels, I will be happy.
Cool! Actually I didnt know about return to dreamland! All these tips are helpful in postponning thr eventual day that I play Blag Flag with them bc they like pirates. Which is prob for the best.
Yea, Super Mario 3D World (and Land) were particularly good in this regard. Beating the levels was mostly pretty easy, but doing so while also picking up the coins could be a real challenge. And the coins actually do something, so there's an inherent motivation there, too.
I have long noticed how, based on your commentary, you seem to be pretty good at video games.
Not being able to upgrade the armor is, I think, the best innovation for this iteration. Its just refreshing not to have to dump upgrade materials into them and thereby limit what armor I can reasonably wear.
Ahh, this is good to know. Majora's Mask in on my list of games I wanna play this year, but I have a horrible habit of just guiding my way through Zeldas these days. Normally it's not too much of an issue, but for Majora it seems like it would be a shame.
Maybe this is how I should approach DS3. The shield is mostly a liability, since enemies have infinite stamina and can usually overwhelm me. I should just cut the cord.
Just start a new character in the original Dark Souls. You might be surprised by how much fun it is to play again from the beginning now that you have knowledge of tactics and surroundings.
Yea, in some ways Kirby feels like a prototype for Super Mario 3D World. It has the explicitly childish focus and the low difficulty which is complemented by more challenging collectibles. I have tried playing Super Mario Galaxy with them, but that game is pretty hard and some of the mechanisms are arcane and it's…
I'm playing Dark Souls 3 and kind of struggling with it. I guess it's because of the faster gameplay. I've never been one for rapid button inputs. My DS style has always been more patient, cautious, and inevitable. But now I find myself mindlessly running through levels, rather than facing down my host of opponents.…
Cool, yea I suspected as much, but still it's hard to know! Many-a-time I've seen a cool illustration or graphic and been thwarted in my efforts to find its origins.
Curt Schilling: "I'm just going to start swinging my arms around like this *starts doing windmills* and if you get punched it's your OWN fault."
Question: does AV Club have a policy for crediting the artist on articles? It seems completely arbitrary whether the artist receives credit or not.
