It’s happened to me so many times that I’m starting to wonder if it’s not the minority.
Jesus, which hole in the sand have you had your head stuck in?!
I think you can’t let people like OP off the hook. They’re too eager to point blame and carry on as usual. I love Peggy McIntosh’s moving walkway theory of racism—it applies to sexism, too (and lots of other forms of oppresison). The idea is that there’s no such thing as passive non-sexism, only active anti-sexism.
Thanks! Just to be clear, I’m a woman. And when I say we all perpetuate patriarchy by virtue of being steeped in it for our entire lives, I really do mean all of us.
Nah man, it is a societal issue.
I don’t understand your point here. No, it’s not all men. But it’s an actual thing that many women have to deal with online. Every day. So it IS an issue. It’s a real thing that is happening. Just because you’re sick of hearing about it doesn’t fail to make it relevant.
The societal issue here isn’t that some people are total abusive assholes—it’s that women aren’t trusted to report their own experiences.
Congratulations!!! You are being awarded a Gold Star for Missing The Entire Fucking Point.
It totally IS a societal issue though. That is WHY it happens. Because socially men think they can do shit like this and get away with it. It’s a social issue tied all up with the same reasons that women get raped and assaulted more than men do, and that we generally face more sexual harassment, and that this dumb and…
The thing is — this video will come as no surprise to any woman, but it obviously comes as a surprise to many men. They don’t have to worry or care about online harassment because their voices are the majority. Spaces are theirs to own.
So then the question is - if it’s a small majority of men, then why the hell has almost *every* woman experienced something similar? Even if it’s just an incredibly small minority of men, if that minority is disproportionally affecting a majority of women, is that not then a societal issue?
really? #notallmen is your response?
That’s very true! And most people don’t actually think most men are like this...which is why it’s important for them to shut down the vile douchbags among them.
i can only imagine. i loved this and think it’s so important. i am truly sorry you had to read these tweets and then experience them all over again during this exercise. i wanted to hug you, too.
*I* wanted to hug them and I was sitting across from them! They were legitimately so upset. It was unreal. Restored my faith in humanity. And bros.
i know. bless them for their reactions and apologies. part of me wishes the douchers who sent these tweets were the ones who would have to read them aloud to these women’s faces, but not sure if that’s even plausible, or safe, or if it would do any good.
I applaud these women for trying to do something to combat the insane blowback to women in sports journalism. I feel awful for the dudes who have to read these, since it almost makes them look like the losers who actually typed those things.
So this is what it looks like when journalists finally start vetting Sanders, huh?
Heads would explode.
