Here in the sticks, aka rural Maine, paying for trash pick up is hilarious to us. We haul our junk to the "dump." Resusable items are often scooped up by pickers and we even sometimes find good usable items, like windows/cardboard/wood/ etc. Our dump even lets us dispose of tires for free.
