I’m always horribly embarrassed whenever I visit another country and most people fluently speak 2-3 languages. Granted, it’s maybe easier when you live in a small country that borders several others, but America still definitely lacks any kind of emphasis on teaching young children a second language.

Very true. At least at the school I went to, we couldn’t start taking a foreign language class until 6th grade, which is already way too late for many people to become fluent in a second language.
