I think the biggest problem with the AA model is that it a) isn’t treatment in any real sense and b) has an astonishingly low “success” rate. The framing of relapse as failure (rather than a hallmark of addiction) is just part and parcel of that all.

I wish people weren’t so black-and-white about sobriety. It’s a very AA-influenced concept and I think it can do harm. You have one drink, well, you’ve just thrown away 6 years of sobriety so might as well go on a bender.

Right. Relapse is not a failure. It is not the end of recovery. It’s just another part of that journey that means you need increased support and maybe a change of strategy. Addiction is not a binary state, and recovery is an ongoing process.
