It's not really a 'tradition' if it's a lack of knowledge. Once more people understand the consequences and rise to the need of suffering woman, the 'tradition' will go away.

It's always the cost of 'losing 500 productive days' that brings about change. Not that people are suffering, but the business is suffering. Blaaach I suppose at least it's a start
