I work in an animation studio in Japan (CG tho, so we are slightly less “black” than these examples). I’m in production management, and lately we’ve been trying to ramp up our staff so doing a lot of interviews for coordinators.

That’s a contractor, not freelance. They have a contract for the term of the project, and the company chooses to renew it or not.
