I think you may be misremembering how long some of the previous titles were. This is easily the longest 2D title in the series. If you’ve played Super more than a few times, 8 hours is crazy long. 

From what I can understand, completion time doesn’t take checkpoint resets or time spent on the map screen into account. So whatever the clock says at the end, there’s a good chance the actual time spent on the game by the player was a few hours longers.
