I almost feel like this Jezebel piece is a bit patronizing in that it assumes poor people naturally try to connive and cheat their way out of poverty and how dare we think that’s unusual.

Jezebel is just not reading the situation at all anymore

Try harder, try hard. I’m saying that this particular person was not impoverished not that no white people are poor. It’s insulting to anyone who is or has been in poverty. Like, actually infuriating. Tara Reade’s life has been drenched in privilege. She got to act as an “expert witness” without one person checking

yeah, I agree with this read of the situation. Like you could get to the end of this Jezebel piece and feel reasonably sure she grew up dirt poor, even though there’s nothing to really indicate that. Like... she was working for Joe Biden very early on in her career. This isn’t a normal sign of being held back.

An awful lot of women grew up poor, didn’t have advantages, were treated poorly by employers, may have been in abusive relationships, and didn’t lie about being sexually assaulted by a US Senator.

I don’t understand why on earth anyone would try to set HER story up as one of oppression

Why are we shitbags if we do not believe her? There is a lot...like A LOT of things that make everything she said doubtful at best.

You know, I can understand how, at first glance, the NYT piece can read as classist.

There is definitely a “forest for the trees” issue here.

I swear this dead horse will come back to life if I just beat it a couple more times.

Poverty?! She was in poverty?!?! This is some White nonsense. I’ll see myself out.

“Antebellum Allure”??? Is Blake Lively high? Like, yes, revisit the charming allure of the American South when black people were still slaves, and black women could be raped with impunity by slave owners and black men could be mutilated and lynched without a second thought. Oh, and here’s some sweet tea, and a frilly

“Believe women” means when a woman makes an accusation, it should be taken seriously, viewed as credible, and an unbiased, thorough investigation should be conducted. It does not mean to continue to believe women regardless of what is discovered. As you said, there are many, many, many reasons to question Tara Reade’s

That’s a strawman, though, because the Politico article does not make the claim that because she had financial difficulty she must be lying about being sexual assaulted. It is about the fact that she seems to have a pattern of lying for personal gain, including lying about her position while working for Joe Biden.

False reports of sexual assault are pretty rare in the regular world, but they aren’t particularly rare in politics—there’s such an obvious incentive to falsify claims in politics that just doesn’t really exist outside of it. Pete Buttigieg was hit with a fake rape claim last year. At least one of the allegations

He comes the intrepid Bernie supporters still promoting these anti Biden attacks. What’s their motivation. Is it their undying support for victims of sexual assault and women’s right in general. Sure Jan. If they were honest these attacks have nothing to do with women’s rights. This character assassination was hatched

This is exactly right. You don’t need to be perfect to credibly allege that you were the victim of a crime, but it is also completely appropriate to be more skeptical of the allegations of someone with a long history of lying and exaggerating to get things from other people. This article is so disingenuous, and I

I honestly cannot figure out why Jezebel keeps defending this lady. The best investigative journalists have followed up and can’t confirm her story. The Obama campaign vetted Biden thoroughly before making him the VP. They wouldn’t miss this if it was real. Everything about her allegations feel wrong about what people

I’m not sure this article really tracks with what Politico was doing. To go public with a sexual assault case against a powerful individual requires one of two things: evidence, or a leap of faith on behalf of the public.
