Precedent is one part, but only one part, of a legal decision, so it is not as if we have only relied on precedent since English Common Law.

Something is a privilege until it isn't. The Supreme Court can go back and forth, relying on precedent, and then deciding it was a bad precedent. Simply relying on precedent is not a terribly well thought out idea, as there have been many stupid and vicious Supreme Court decisions.
