If you screw up the phone, you can restore it... If regular restoring won't work, there's DFU mode.

Update, but you have the RESTORE to update. You can't just hit update or there will be battery issues, crashes, etc. Just back it up, restore it (which will update it) and then restore backup.

It did get it but it was slow as molasses. And developers make that decision, not Apple.
