Yes, fall damage is handled well in Breath of the Wild, because it’s one part of a well designed system of climbing, gliding, and stamina management. But the threat of fall damage is still an important part of that system.

In a video game, you should be able to go up without having to worry that you’re going to have to find some trick to go down (like slowly hugging jagged rocks in an Elder Scrolls game).

Counterpoint: Fall damage, while sometimes annoying, is often fine. Would Breath of the Wild be better if you could just jump or fall off of anything without ever taking damage? It would not.

Fall damage has always been one of my biggest pet peeves in gaming. There are times when it makes sense, like in BotW if something smacks you off a cliff, it makes sense that you die. In most games though, it just makes navigation annoying. If you get something like a glider, again like BotW, it can be excused, as it
