But rating classifications have nothing to do with being scary. There's plenty of dull R-rated horror out there. And there's a few shining examples of PG-13 horror - The Others, The Sixth Sense, The Ring, Mama, Drag Me To Hell, Insidious, Poltergeist (actually a PG) to name some popular choices.

You might (MIGHT) get away with it if you have a great editor, though.

Your comment reminds me of Mike Birbiglia. His show "My Girlfriend's Boyfriend" was a fantastic blend of dramatic performance, comedy and gut-wrenching emotion. It's on Netflix and well worth watching - just don't go in expecting a typical stand-up routine.

I think you're overstating it a little bit. You're ignoring the sheer popularity of jazz, a complex genre in terms of melody, harmony, structure and rhythm, during the decades that preceded The Beatles. If you account for the broader musical landscape, which consisted of much more than early rock music, The Beatles

Well, it seems ironic that Lou Reed had misgivings about The Beatles when the instrumental passage in the middle of "What You're Doing" (the sloppy piano and slightly overdriven guitar) always reminds me of Velvet Underground, which was a solid 2-3 years before VU released any music.

There was nothing particularly unusual about the chords and time signatures from Please Please Me up to Help! (maybe large portions of Rubber Soul). They used mostly barre chords and open chords. Lead guitar parts were similar to Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly, though Harrison often took a more minimalist approach.

But surely he's into The Beatles.
