I’m just taking it too literally. I read Dune when I was 14 so I get that. Harry Potter would be Grade through High school but I don’t recall anyone referring to it as YA. I guess I just have bad associations with the term. Every time I hear YA, this comes to mind.
My dad ate it during WWII. He said that it was very rich and he didn’t like it much. Which said a lot, as he was English and would eat all sorts of things that the rest of us wouldn’t. When my mother cooked special meals for him, even the cat went outside until the smell dispersed.
