I think your point about money/sets is crucial to why there are so few. Not specifically because they are more expensive, but because they are more expensive with a lower built-in audience. In other words, the $/viewer ratio for high fantasy (which requires much more set & costume design and/or CGI) is very different…

I finished S4 of Person Of Interest last weekend and Netflix added the fifth season last night. I know what I am watching tonight!
