I read the conclusion entirely differently. To the degree that this article criticizes him, it’s more about how he bragged about doing all of this as recently as 2012, as opposed to criticizing him for what he actually did back in 1974.

Have you read Howl’s Moving Castle? It’s also an English children’s book. Studio Ghibli significantly changed the plot, however, and made it more into an anti-war movie with morally grey characters and contemplative themes (aka, three things the studio is very well-known for). So it FEELS like a Ghibli movie still.

I have not seen either Arrietty or Marnie so I can’t comment on that, but I would definitely say it is worse than the Ghibili movies I’ve seen that people think of as the “average” ones.
